Sickweather spent 8 years and $100K+ to obtain a patent; Is IP protection worth the cost?

Graham Dodge wanted to check a box for investors seeking security for his crowdsourced sickness forecasting startup Sickweather, he said. Obtaining a patent for the technology, however, proved a tougher task to chart.  “We just wanted to protect ourselves to build value in the company,” said Dodge, CEO of Sickweather, as well as Garnish Health, a reciprocating donation platform for health care funds. “We had a lot of investors early on who asked us if we had any intellectual property protection. And a patent is a great way to have that IP protection.” Click here to read more about Sickweather, a member of the inaugural Sprint Accelerator class in Kansas City. After filing for a provisional patent, the application was rejected time and again by Sickweather’s patent examiner, Dodge said.  “At one point, we resigned from thinking that we’d ever get the patent, and adopted the now-popular notion that patents aren’t actually worth much these days — or they aren’t defensible for a startup,” he said, noting the Baltimore-born startup spent more than $100,000 through the patent application process.  “It was the office actions and the back and forth with our legal counsel [that] rapidly...

A Costco membership opens doors, quite literally, to a vast selection of bulk-size groceries and household

A Costco membership opens doors, quite literally, to a vast selection of bulk-size groceries and household goods selling at discounted prices. But buying potato chips and toilet paper by the case is just the start. The warehouse club also stocks everything from tires and furniture to electronics and jewelry. With so many items to choose from, Trae Bodge, a consumer expert who specializes in smart shopping strategies, says it’s critical to shop Costco with a list to avoid overspending. List or no list, shoppers seem to like the savings and selection. Costco has nearly 52 million paid members around the world, with an 88% renewal rate worldwide (90% in the U.S. and Canada). The chain ranks first in customer satisfaction among department and discount stores, according to the American Customer Satisfaction Index, edging out rivals Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale. Thinking of taking the Costco plunge? Here’s what you should know before investing at least $60 in an annual membership. If you’re not ready to commit to a year-long membership, there are still ways to shop at Costco. Members are allowed to bring up to two guests. So if you want to check out the ...

Camilla Parker-Bowles’ FAB new handbag has a secret link to Meghan Markle

The Duchess of Cornwall is currently on a three-day visit to Cornwall with her husband Prince Charles and her working wardrobe has been as first-rate as always. The 71-year-old was seen enjoying the sunshine on Tuesday as she arrived at a garden party to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ginsters bakery in Callington. The mother-of-two decided to opt for a pastel blue frock that was adorned with the cutest cream floral print. Accessorising to perfection, she added a  pearl necklace and nude high heels and looked fresh and lightly tanned. Did you notice her handbag though? The Duchess carried a lovely tote bag, in a light cream – by DeMellier London. The £295 arm candy is known as the ‘Mini Venice’ and you can purchase it in a variety of different shades including purple and blush pink. Camilla also has this bag in green, so it is clearly one of her faves. The Duchess of Sussex sported this very same design in green too, back in January 2018, on an official visit to Cardiff. The mother-of-one wore a smart black jacket by Stella McCartney and a matching scarf, while wearing trousers by Welsh brand Hieut Denim, and a pair of black velvet heeled boots. Her bag was ...

It’s ridiculously easy to lay hands on a cheap DC-to-AC inverter these days. They’re in just about every discount or variety store and let you magically plug in mains powered devices where no outlets exist. Need 120- or 240-VAC in your car? No problem – a little unit that plugs into the lighter socket is available for a few bucks. So are these commodity items worth building yourself? Probably not as [GreatScott!] explains, but learning how they work and what their limitations are will probably help your designs. The cheapest and most common inverters have modified square wave outputs, which yield a waveform that’s good enough for most electronics and avoids the extra expense of producing a pure sinusoidal output. He explains that the waveform is just a square wave with a slight delay at the zero-crossing points to achieve the stepped pattern, and shows a simple H-bridge circuit to produce it. He chose to drive the output section with an Arduino, to easily produce the zero-crossing delay. He uses this low-voltage inverter to demonstrate how much more complicated the design needs to get to overcome the spikes caused by inductive loads and the lack of feedback from the output. Bott...

TikTok challenge gone wrong: 12-year-old boy hangs himself wearing mangalsutra, bangles in Rajasthan

Before hanging himself, the boy had worn mangalsutra (sacred thread worn by Hindu married women) and bangles. He then wrapped a thick metal chain around his neck and hanged himself with it in his bathroom — all apparently part of the rules of Tik Tok challenge. The incident took place late at night. When the boy’s family found him missing in the morning, they raised an alarm. They later discovered him hanging from the ceiling of the bathroom. According to the boy’s father, the state he was found in was exactly like that described in the Tik Tok challenge. “He was wearing mangalsutra and bangles and was wearing a noose made from chains and was found hanging. He was using Tik Tok the entire night,” the father of the child said. SSI Bharat Singh told reporters that when the boy’s family took him to a private hospital, he was declared dead. A postmortem was also conducted on the body. Fashion Accessories, Jewelry Sets, Key Chain, Mony Clip – Minggui Jewelry,https://www.jewellrylove.com/

As Rents Rise, Artists Are Reviving the Idea of the Medieval Guild

From London to Berlin, five collectives embracing the centuries-old structure of shared resources and labor. Starting in the Middle Ages, when craft guilds were first conceived in Western Europe, artisans — from haberdashers to glassmakers — have organized themselves in skill-based communities to control production and quality, support apprenticeship and obtain local influence. Here, we highlight five collectives across the continent that are reviving that centuries-old structure of shared resources and labor. Inspired by the collaborative tenets of the Bauhaus school in Germany, the rise of contemporary co-working spaces around the world and the groundswell of socialist rhetoric in the face of increasing urban gentrification, these communities are redefining the relationship between designers and the cities in which they live. [Coming later this spring: the T List newsletter, a weekly roundup of what T Magazine editors are noticing and coveting. By inviting artists to...

Future is clear: Transparent bags are the new concert T-shirt

We went to the Paul McCartney show at SAP Center on Wednesday night with the hottest new item in concert fashion: A clear, 12-inch-by-12-inch backpack. The three-hour concert by the former Beatle — a fantastic show, if that needed to be said — was the first major event at SAP Center since it rolled out the new clear-bag policy July 1, joining a growing list of stadiums and arenas that have done so since the NFL led the way in 2013. If I had a time machine, I’d go back a few years and dump every penny I could find into a company that makes clear backpacks. It would be like buying Apple stock in 1980. The new policy was not without its bumps. There were lines snaking around both sides of the downtown San Jose arena more than an hour before the show, but it went relatively fast and smoothly once things got moving. For those who didn’t know about the new policy, an outdoor bag check was available for $5. (Anyone going to the Queen + Adam Lambert show Sunday at SAP Center can consider themselves forewarned.) For us, the backpack took the place of my wife’s purse, so it held her wallet, keys, an empty water bottle, a phone and a sweatshirt. You can still bring in a clutch purse for p...

Nicola Barker interview: ‘I wanted to be a go-go dancer’ | Culture

The experimental novelist thought she might never write her latest work, she tells Patricia Nicol. But there were always other options… Nobody sets off to interview a leading experimental novelist expecting electric clothes dryers to feature prominently in the conversation. Yet here we are in the airy kitchen of Nicola Barker’s flat in Faversham, Kent — chocolate digestives before us, African tribal masks and crucifixes eyeballing us from the walls — discussing the pivotal role of one such dryer in her delightfully batty new novella. “The book is, like, profoundly insignificant,” she says, laughing. “Indeed, I think the only really important thing in it is the electric clothes dryer. I mean, that really is the main theme. Do you have one? And do you love it? I love mine. It’s the best thing. Ever!” Get The International Pack for free for your first 30 days for unlimited Smartphone and Tablet access.
