The holidays are right around the corner. The to-do list is longer than ever. Is baking

The holidays are right around the corner. The to-do list is longer than ever. Is baking cookies on your to-do list? If you love to bake cookies without a lot of fuss, here are two true-blue recipes from Penn State Extension. These recipes use basic ingredients and are easy to follow. The first cookie is “no bake chocolate cookies.” If the protein gluten causes a concern, this recipe does not use wheat, barley, rye or triticale. If you prefer not to use margarine, canola oil can be substituted. This is made on top of the stove. No oven is required. Combine sugar, water, cocoa, and margarine in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and boil for one minute. Add peanut butter, vanilla and oats. Cool slightly. Drop by spoonful onto a plate. These can be made ahead three or four days before needed. The second recipe is an easy bar cookie. You may substitute dried blueberries or cranberries for the raisins. You can double this recipe. Just use a 9 by 11-inch pan. Mix, bake and then freeze if desired. Beat butter and sugar together until creamy. Blend in egg and vanilla. Combine flour and baking powder. Add to creamed mixture and beat until smooth. Stir in oats and raisins. Spread batter in light...

For most nurseries considering automating a part of their production process, the most important question is simple: what does it cost? But at Willowbend Nurseries, the most important question is different: “How many guys am I going to need through the year if I buy that machine?” says Chad Unger, operations manager of the Perry, Ohio, wholesale grower. “Some can save five guys, some could save 25 guys; it just depends on what you’re using the machine for.” Willowbend Nursery was founded in 1897. In 2006, Willowbend underwent its second bankruptcy proceeding. In the spring of 2007 Angelo Petitti of Petitti Garden Centers purchased Willowbend out of bankruptcy and Willowbend’s subsidiary container nursery, Ridge Manor Nurseries, out of receivership. Petitti ranks no. 3 on Garden Center magazine’s Top 100 independent garden center list. The Ohio-based retailer has nine locations and reported $55 million in sales volume for 2017. “Willowbend, especially, is an icon of a nursery,” Petitti said at the time of the acquisition to Crain’s Cleveland Business. “We saw that as an opportunity.” Kurt Unger runs the nursery with his son, Chad. They’ve worked together to grow the nursery whil...

As The Elms roof is repaired Christmas plans won’t be deterred – News – The Newport Daily News

The only change visible from the street will be scaffolding and a debris chute on the Bellevue Avenue face of The Elms on its northeast corner. Visitor parking and general access to the grounds will be unchanged. The Preservation Society of Newport County will begin work to restore the flat roof at The Elms this week. The Elms will remain open during this $600,000 project. The house will be decorated for Christmas and all tours will continue as scheduled, as will the holiday evening planned for Saturday, Dec. 21. “The work of historical preservation goes on 12 months a year thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors,” Preservation Society CEO Trudy Coxe said in a release. “There is always another project requiring urgent attention. So even as we begin the work on The Elms we are fundraising for roof projects at Marble House and Rosecliff, which will each run over $1 million.” The Elms has a two-tiered roof. The specific area where this restoration work will take place involves the upper flat roof over the servants’ quarters, which was last replaced in the 1980s. Copper gutters, downspouts and soffits will be replaced, new flashing and skylights will be added, and the ter...

In this Teardown Tuesday, we are to take a look at a portable Wi-Fi router and USB battery pack. We are going crack open a HooToo TripMate part number HT-TM01. The Tripmate is a 3-in-1 gadget that can act as a portable charger, a personal hotspot, or a file-sharing hub. This is a compact device that is only 96mm long, 44mm wide, and 29mm thick. There were no screws on this outside of this enclosure. The plastic shell was tightly clipped together. To open it, a small flathead screwdriver was used to separate the halves. Once the shell was separated, the battery, which was held in place with foam tape, could then be removed. The five-position connector on the battery was then unplugged from the circuit board. The circuit board was held in place with more plastic clips. There is a single circuit board inside of this travel router, measuring 94mm by 32mm. This small PCB contains surface mount components on both sides. This a pretty typical looking circuit board with green solder mask and white silkscreen on both sides. As I mentioned, this device is not only a travel router but also a USB battery pack. The product description lists the capacity of the battery as 6000mAh. In this bat...

We’ve all seen cheap welders for sale from the usual online sources, small inverter stick welders

We’ve all seen cheap welders for sale from the usual online sources, small inverter stick welders for a very tempting price. But are they any good? When my local supermarket had one in its offers aisle, I took the plunge and placed it in my cart alongside the usual week’s supply of Marmite. That was some time around the start of the year. What I’d bought from my local Aldi was a Workzone WWIW-80, an 80 A unit that had cost me somewhere just over £60 (about $75), and came with welding leads and a rather poor quality face shield. The German discount supermarket chains specialise in periodic offers on all kinds of interesting things, so a very similar unit has also been for sale with a Parkside brand from their competitor Lidl. These small inverter welders are fairly generic, so they can be found with a variety of brands and specifications at a lower price online if you don’t mind forgoing the generous Aldi 3 year guarantee. The cheapest I’ve seen was about £35, or $44, but that price included only the inverter, without welding leads. As a working blacksmith my dad has had a high-quality inverter welder since the 1990s, so my frame of reference is based upon that. He tried one of t...
